The Frederiksberg Hospital site is the last major piece of urban renewal in Frederiksberg. The development plan for the area proposes a whole new district which will house around 2,000 inhabitants in the future. The new district in this special place is to be developed with respect for the identity and character of the location, based on the vision of ‘growing the new out of the old’, while the area will undergo a major transformation to turn it from a ‘hospital island’ into a vibrant, green, integrated and mixed neighbourhood.

A well-run, vibrant and relevant district will not grow out of the architecture alone. Taking a robust overall approach to the district, we have reinstated an avenue, prioritised a 12,000 m² park which will be a destination for the whole town, and worked around a ‘funnel structure’ which invites people in on a journey of discovery. The network of urban spaces offers a series of experiences and places to appeal to different generations, including playgrounds, coffee shops, sculpture gardens, trim trails and exercise spaces.
It uses consciously chosen sizes of ‘mini-districts’ and clusters. A mini-district comprises 100-200 homes while a cluster is made up of 30-50 units, to create manageable local communities. It is proposed to organise the clusters into a number of courtyard groups within a larger district association. Every cluster will contain at least one of the existing historic buildings
Existing and new buildings along Sundhedsstrøget (the main axis of the old hospital) will be built and/or modified to produce a fluid boundary between inside and outside. The open layout of the buildings will promote areas for shared facilities where functions and users can mix.
The overall plan has been drawn up with many different aspects of sustainability in mind. For example, there is a great emphasis on retaining the many green areas and creating new ones, which will both promote biodiversity and provide for climate adaptation of the area. And in transforming large areas of the existing hospital buildings, the aim is to produce a low CO₂ footprint from the conversion.
