Danish Crown's slaughterhouse in Horsens is one of the biggest in Europe and one of the most modern pig slaughterhouses in the world. The project is proof of how architecture and process design can go hand in hand to create good working conditions and optimised logistical solutions.

Close collaboration between architects, structural and installation engineers and technical and process consultants has produced a coherent whole, where the layout, shape and function of the building complement the daily operations of the slaughterhouse.

On the architecture side, intensive effort went into the design of buildings and outdoor facilities, so the complex forms an architectural whole and provides an ideal setting for both internal and external logistics. Because of its size, the building stands out as a striking and monumental element in the undulating landscape northwest of Horsens. The building complex is shaped by the external boundaries and geometry of the individual production units. The many volumes vary in size and geometry, so the facing material also becomes an important means of giving the building a homogeneous and harmonious look.

The production buildings, staff facilities and processing floor make up the main elements of the building complex. Staff facilities in the centre of the plant form the backbone of the complex, and draw the buildings together into an integrated composition. It is important that the elements should express their functional differences and signal a good working environment, modern business and high hygiene standards.
