Container Living Musicon

Innovative container homes focusing on design, quality and comfort

In a rough former industrial area in Roskilde, a row of homes made of containers has sprung up. Part of a brand-new concept, the 30 homes are housed in three high-rise blocks in the creative quarter of Roskilde called Musicon.

A large former industrial area in the south of Roskilde has recently undergone a major transformation to become the city’s creative quarter, called Musicon. In the coming years, the plan is for the 250,000 m² site, which was previously home to a concrete factory, to provide 1,000 jobs and 1,000 homes.

Here we have developed a concept made up of new homes in containers. The project consists of a ground floor made of concrete, with large glass elements which help to tie the building into the history of the area. There will be 48 containers stacked up on this base, providing 30 homes in all. Retaining the external look of the individual containers and setting them against the concrete base provides the Musicon quarter with some completely unique and authentic homes.

The building is structured around a concrete base with three high-rise towers arranged in a semi-circle and facing the two main streets in Musicon, Rabalderstræde and Penselstrøget. Behind the buildings there are staircases and a small square with barbecue area, cycle parking and open spaces. All of these will make for a vibrant environment around the future containers.

The homes will be either 30 or 60 m², each with their own kitchen and bathroom, underfloor heating and ventilation. Each home will have plate-glass windows and most will have balconies to bring light into the flats. The complex will also have a shared roof terrace with a fantastic view over the iconic gold building of the Ragnarock Museum.

The basic idea of living in containers is intended to address the issue of resource consumption while also allowing the homes to be easily moved elsewhere if the need should arise.

From the conceptual design phase onwards, the project has had a strong focus on sustainability, as the basic idea of living in containers is intended to address the issue of resource consumption while also allowing the homes to be easily moved elsewhere if the need should arise. The concept of homes in containers has also been awarded a grant from Realdania to test out the voluntary sustainability class.

Container Living Musicon has been developed as a concept in close collaboration with the client, and has also been implemented in residential developments in Fredericia and Vejle.
