Are timber buildings always more costly than concrete ones and is that the price we must pay for sustainability?
Together with COWI and in collaboration with The Chalmers University of Technology, we conducted a study where we compared the construction costs for buildings with mainly concrete and buildings with mainly cross-laminated timber in Sweden and Norway.
Our answer is, as so often: It depends on the project. But in general, our study shows, that the costs go down the more experience with timber you have and the work environment improves, and construction time on site is shortened when building with CLT.
