When Hammel Neurocenter was given the status of West Denmark's principal centre for the early rehabilitation of severely handicapped children, young people and adults, Arkitema was responsible for the preparation of a master plan for the expansion of the existing neurological centre. Arkitema also prepared preliminary designs which formed the basis for the tendering of a turnkey contract. As a starting-point for the master plan, we held a number of meetings with staff groups with the aim of securing the best possible environment for rehabilitation.
The new property links the existing centre's many small buildings in a unified complex surrounding a protected courtyard garden. The centre's logistics were also significantly improved. The training centre is located on the ground floor, with a multi-purpose hall that can be utilised for lectures, staff training, etc. This is also where the foyer is located, in association with an administrative area. On the first floor is a children's in-patient ward, as well as a new canteen for the entire centre, close to a sensory garden in a protected courtyard.
The two uppermost floors house the moderate and intensive wards; each of these has room for 15 patients, as well as lounge areas and training rooms. The final phase was the rebuilding of the existing main building. Here, the physiotherapy department is located on the ground floor, and three in-patient wards on the other floors. The completed neurological centre was opened in October 2004.
