Arkitema Learning

Arkitema Learning

Few buildings in our lives have such an emotional impact on us as our schools. Only our childhood homes bring back stronger memories. And if you ask anyone to describe their schooldays, they will naturally include a description of the building. Not the architectural details, of course, but rather an emotional description of the building's smell, colours, atmosphere and layout.

Network in Arkitema

At Arkitema we believe that the physical environment of education influences the learning culture. We feel it is very important that the physical environment supports and secures the optimum learning conditions. Accordingly, we have established a strong network in Arkitema, Arkitema Learning, which consists of a number of education specialists whose primary task is to continually enhance and rethink the ways in which the physical environment can promote learning. We have chosen Bjarne Bach to be headmaster of Arkitema Learning. The network ensures that everyone in Arkitema always has the latest educational research and knowledge at hand – just around the corner in Arkitema Aarhus or Arkitema Copenhagen. The principal objective of the network is to support Arkitema's knowledge of learning environments, by which we mean the physical surroundings for education in a broad sense: primary schools, secondary schools and universities, but also the information and knowledge centres of public and private organisations – all potentially places in which learning takes place.

New learning environments – now

Obviously, tomorrow's adults will be just like today's, if we continue to build the same old classrooms and long, long corridors. But if, instead, we plan the schools of the future to support modern educational theory, the school building could provide a giant leap forward in quality for the entire nation. The result could be better educated children, happier teachers, happier parents – and in the final analysis, more quality and prosperity for all.

Arkitema is one of Denmark's most experienced architectural practices in the planning and design of visionary schools which support and promote modern educational methods. Through innovative drafting processes based on anthropological techniques and educational theory, we reveal the needs of the individual school – and its wishes. The result is not just beautiful Scandinavian architecture, but also school buildings with a strong human content: buildings which support the client's social and educational aims.

There is no time to waste – we need a school that lives and learns
