Mutengo Farm Resort is a large, coherent architectural complex containing mixed development, including beach houses, golf houses, apartments, several hotels, a shopping centre and staff accommodation. The development lies at right-angles to the coast, taking a winding route from the white-sanded beach and into the fertile landscape of the countryside. The shopping centre takes the form of a circular focal point linking the exclusive beach houses, apartments and golf houses with the meandering hotel complex. The centre is also a traffic hub on the main Estrada Carrocavel highway, which runs parallel to the coast.
All of the residences are very open and light in their construction and materials, using local wood varieties and concrete cast on site. Climbing plants traverse the concrete facades, giving them life and greenery. The facades reflect the bright, tropical environment.
The hotel section lies on the land side of the highway, and takes the form of a long, flowing structure which winds through the landscape. The rooms here are terraced upwards and across an internal promenade space, which is thereby partly enclosed. The apartments are constructed like wooden boxes placed in a shelf-like structural system.
A wealth of activities can take place in the inner space, with its bars, lounges, restaurants and shops; a very special and experientially rich interior, which can be experienced as a cave or as an architectural ravine.
